Scheduled servicing is the minimum maintenance required to keep your motorcycle on the road. Every model is scheduled differently, so the owner's manual is the final word. These are the four service levels we offer to meet Harley-Davidson, Ducati and BMW mechanical specifications — if you are unsure which one your bike is due for, send us the model and mileage.
A yearly service to keep the motorcycle feeling healthy and running at its best.
The regular interval freshen-up that keeps wear items and running condition in check.
A midway check on running condition between major services.
The most vital step in motorcycle maintenance — the full standard for Harley-Davidson, Ducati and BMW mechanical specifications.
The most basic form of scheduled maintenance, and the right call for a rider who does not get many chances to get out. It is a simplified, cheaper alternative to a minor service when the calendar date falls due before the kilometre checkpoint — compare the task lists to see the difference.
Recommended at roughly 5,000 – 6,000 kilometre (3,100 – 3,700 mile) intervals. Most later models (around 2014 onwards) do not list a minor service until 15,000 km (9,300 mi), but we still recommend carrying them out more regularly — 15,000 km (9,300 mi) is a long stretch to go without maintenance. Your owner’s manual has your model’s schedule; ask us if you are not sure you are on it.
Typically carried out at increments of 10,000, 12,000 or 15,000 kilometres (6,200, 7,500 or 9,300 miles) depending on model and era, and most often halfway between major services. It is often overlooked, yet it is critical to fine tuning and long-term running. Some models from roughly 2014 onwards only call for a minor service at the halfway point, though we have found checking valve clearances between majors is highly beneficial on particular models.
Also known as a desmo service on Ducati models, and the major valve-clearance service on Harley-Davidson and BMW, carried out at intervals anywhere from 20,000 to 30,000 kilometres (12,400 to 18,600 miles) depending on the model. The lifespan of a motorcycle comes down to the quality of the maintenance it receives, and a major service keeps it running well for tens of thousands of kilometres. Some elements are time dependent and may be due sooner even if the kilometres have not been reached.
